Dois poemas de Frank Bidart
ESTROFES TERMINANDO COM AS MESMAS DUAS PALAVRAS
Primeiro, me senti receoso porque havia entrado
pela porta que dizia Tua Morte.
Nenhuma palavra de valor se
desentranhava de tua morte.
És a ruÃna cujo braço enlaça a mulher jovem
no bar póstumo, antes de tua morte.
Acima de ti, a grama ainda
está faminta, alimentada por tua morte.
Mata quem matou teu pai, disse tua vida
voltando-se de novo para mim antes de tua morte.
DifÃcil envelhecer e manter a fome.
Ainda tinhas fome na hora de tua morte.
STANZAS ENDING WITH THE SAME TWO WORDS
At first I felt shame because I had entered
through the door marked Your Death.
Not a valuable word written
unsteeped in your death.
You are the ruin whose arm encircles the young woman
at the posthumous bar, before your death.
The grass is still hungry
above you, fed by your death.
Kill whatever killed your father, your life
turning to me again said before your death.
Hard to grow old still hungry.
You were still hungry at your death.
FOME DO ABSOLUTO
A Terra você sabe é redonda mas parece chata.
Você não pode confiar
nos sentidos.
Você pensa que já viu todo tipo de criatura
porém não
esta criatura.
*
Quando o conheci, sabia que
me havia desmamado de Deus, não
da fome do absoluto. Ó boca
insaciável pronunciando o que é e deve
permanecer inapreensÃvel —
dizendo Você não é finito. Você não é finito.
HUNGER FOR THE ABSOLUTE
Earth you know is round but seems flat.
You can’t trust
your senses.
You thought you had seen every variety of creature
but not
this creature.
*
When I met him, I knew I had
weaned myself from God, not
hunger for the absolute. O unquenched
mouth, tonguing what is and must
remain inapprehensible —
saying You are not finite. You are not finite.
